Successful entrepreneurs in the business world understand the many distractions in their business, referred to as noise. Noise is complaints, temporary failures, naysayers, and issues that have nothing to do with success. These entrepreneurs are highly motivated in their efforts to accomplish their goals (signal). Why do some businesses thrive while others fail? Successful entrepreneurs cut through the noise, driven by an unshakable confidence in their business or product.
The ministry isn’t a business, but it shares many similar qualities. Its mission is to save souls and build a strong church to advance the gospel’s work. Yet, pastors can easily lose focus due to temporary setbacks or distractions from time-wasting activities and people. There are members in every church who will consume your energy, and they never seem to change, despite your spending countless hours trying to help them. Temporary failures can sideline the work, and in addition, some people believe it is their gift to criticize the work while never helping to further it.
Unlike business professionals who often prioritize their career over their family and personal health, pastors must view the time they spend with their family as a primary role in their purpose. Your ministry goals must not be at the expense of losing your family. Losing your family to accomplish the work of the ministry is not success. In the secular world, success is often defined by professional achievements, but in ministry, nurturing family relationships is a vital component of true success. While businesspeople may focus entirely on their professional ambitions, the ministry emphasizes the importance of relationships. Sacrificing family for the sake of ministerial work is not a true measure of success. Your family is more important than anything on this earth.
The ministry is a spiritual work, unlike a business. Leaders need you to spend time with them and train them. The signal (Goals) is not all-consuming at the expense of important relationships. You don’t fire people and force them to conform to every task by mandate. However, failure to focus on the goals and success of the ministry will lead to failure. There will always be people who cause problems rather than solve problems. Preachers can allow negative remarks to quench their spirit. You must not permit problem people to rob you of your time and goals. Hobbies can provide a needed break to mend your mind and body, but at the same time, they can be a distraction to you, costing you valuable time. Television, video games, and social media can steal precious hours and hinder you from accomplishing your most important tasks.
Your primary focus must be on proclaiming the gospel and strengthening God’s church. Distractions can impede the growth and effectiveness of your ministry. Recognize and remove these distractions to stay focused on the most important duties. It is possible to achieve success without hindering your relationship with your family.
